Ramadan: A month of blessings | By Jamilah Mirza

What is Ramadan?

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is considered the holiest month of the year for Muslims. During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from food, drink, smoking, and sexual relations from sunrise to sunset. We also focus on spiritual growth by praying, reading the Quran, and giving to charity.

Why is Ramadan important to me?

There are many reasons Ramadan is important to Muslims, here are a few that are important to me:

  1. A time for spiritual reflection and growth 🌱 ⇨ Fasting helps me to focus and improve on my relationship with God.

  2. Charity and giving 💸 ⇨ Muslims are encouraged to give to charity during Ramadan and help those less fortunate. Every little helps!

  3. Ramadan is a time for family and community 👪 ⇨ I often break my fast with family and friends, in which we attend prayers together and spend quality time with each other.

My Experience Of Fasting While Taking Part In A Full-Time Apprenticeship

During my apprenticeship I found fasting both rewarding and challenging. Here are some tips I have learned during this experience:

  1. Communicate 💬 ⇨ Let your manager know during this month you may lack energy or require flexibility with timings and days you commute to the office. I found this very effective as it allowed me to spend extra time on improving my relationship with God.

  2. Prayer 🤲 ⇨ It’s important to find time to connect with God, although I found it difficult to balance both work and prayer, in the future I would block out time in my calendar for prayer/time to connect with God.

  3. Keep a snack stash  😉 ⇨ If you’re commuting to and from work you may miss iftar time so I would keep a stash of dates in your bag in case you need to break your fast on the go.

  4. Treat people with kindness 🤗  ⇨ Focusing on the way I treated others was very important to me this Ramadan. Forgiving someone for their actions and putting my trust in God allowed me to improve as an individual.
