Work Smarter, Not Harder | by Etienne Tracey
You might have already heard of the expression “work smarter, not harder”. But what does it actually mean, and how can we apply it to our daily lives?
When we say to not work hard, it does not imply laziness or half-finished jobs. Rather, at its core, the idea of working smarter is all about efficiency. It's about finding ways to maximize our productivity without sacrificing mental or physical health. With some small tweaks to our work habits, we can aim to work more strategically and deliberately, leveraging our strengths to achieve better results. Here are five helpful tips and tricks that you can use to boost your productivity and, hopefully, enjoy the work you do!
1) Quality over quantity
When it comes to productivity, it's easy to fall into the trap of thinking that more is always better. But in reality, quality is far more important than quantity. Rather than churning out a high volume of work, focus on producing high-quality work that meets your standards of excellence. My company champions the value of “owning it”. Take pride in what you do!
2) Get into a healthy workflow
Take a critical look at your workflow and identify any areas where you could be more efficient. Are there unnecessary steps in the process that you could eliminate? By streamlining your workflow, you can free up more time and energy for the tasks that require your skills and expertise.
3) Use your resources
Technology has revolutionized the way we work, offering countless tools and apps to help us be more productive. Personally, I have used a handful of project management sites like Trello or Notion to help with organisation. With even more of a buzz is the potential and capabilities around advancements in AI. Why not take an hour out of your week to experiment with some and learn how they could benefit you?
4) Create clear but lenient goals
Goals are incredibly important. I would recommend writing down somewhere your short, medium, and long-term goals, in a place where you can review and revisit them immediately. Perhaps a less common tip, however, is intentionally setting deadlines with more time than needed. This allows you to be flexible with your own time, explore opportunities you might not have foreseen, and also takes the pressure off a bit. It’s never good to be too stressed.
5) Prioritise self-care
The final point is perhaps the most important. If you are burnt out, your work is not going to reflect what you are truly capable of. One of my friends has the great saying that “Your work ethic is only as good as your rest ethic”. From my experience, these are words to live by. If you can use time off to explore hobbies and ideas that genuinely excite you as well as master the art of a lazy Saturday afternoon, your work week will be all the more enjoyable!
This is a non-exhaustive list of steps you can take to uplift your work quality and reduce stress. Try to take one or two, to begin with, and stick with it, building work habits. This is fundamental to a growth mindset, which is a sought-after skill in business, and will help you more generally with working smart. Most importantly, take pride and enjoy your work!
