Navigating Distressing World Events

Published on October 26, 2023

In recent times, you may have found yourself overwhelmed by the wave of devastating events sweeping across the globe. Remember that it is entirely normal to experience such feelings. Our modern world, especially through social media, inundates us with an unprecedented amount of information. This constant barrage can significantly impact our mental health and well-being.  In such tough times, finding a community can be a great source of comfort. We’d like you to know that you can always find a community here at Multiverse to support you.

Whether you are directly or indirectly affected by world news, having access to the right support resources is key to navigating these difficult times. We’ve listed some tips and resources available to you below.

Tips for How to Support Your Own Wellbeing

  • Know that what you’re feeling is valid: Try to identify what you’re feeling and accept it. Fear? Worry? Sense of helplessness? Anger? All of these are valid emotions to have when you are faced with tough times. Label them and show yourself some compassion for having these emotions.
  • Focus on what you can control: Pandemics, conflicts, natural disasters… These are big and complex things that can feel out of your control, so focus on what you can do to influence change. Perhaps you can donate to a human rights organisation, contact your local government, join a peaceful protest or march, or participate in volunteering opportunities.
  • Stay informed but know when to put down the phone: We know that it’s tempting to keep checking your phone or news sites to keep up to date with the news, but remember that this can be emotionally draining. If you feel like you need a break, try muting your notifications or taking a break from checking the news. See how this makes you feel. If you notice that your stress levels are down, consider limiting your daily news intake.
  • Connect with your community: If you’re feeling overwhelmed with the news, chances are that there are many others who feel the same way. Connecting with people who are going through similar experiences can help alleviate the stress. Reach out to a friend or a family member.
  • Take care of your physical well-being: It becomes extremely important to take care of ourselves in tough times, and taking care of yourself physically can have a positive impact on your emotional well-being.  By having a balanced diet, getting your body moving, setting aside time away from technology, and getting enough sleep, you can take care of your mental health with your daily routines.
  • Speak with your coach: All our coaches have received appropriate training to help you respond to your needs or guide you through the correct steps to help you get the support you need. They can be your first point of contact if you’d like to speak to someone as they’re there to support you.
  • Speak with your manager/HR team: If you are struggling significantly with day-to-day activities, speak with your manager, G,P or medical professional.
