Navigating My Apprenticeship and the Corporate World | by Lucy Herbert
I started my apprenticeship a couple of months ago, working a full-time position in an office in the corporate world. This was all completely new to me, having come from working in retail and warehouse jobs for the past 2 years. Not only was the environment and industry new to me, but my apprenticeship and the qualification were all new to me as well. Naturally, I was nervous at the beginning, trying to navigate my way around office etiquette and best practices and trying to learn new things at the same time. I found there was so much to learn at the beginning - now a few months in, and I still feel that way which is absolutely fine. I have found my feet and have been given some good projects to work on which I’m very grateful for.
With the apprenticeship route, I was unsure if I wanted to go back into education after not studying or being in education for over a year. I was very apprehensive but I soon realised this was very different to how school and college were and I’m so glad I did. I like the sessions that we have every month, learning the contents of each module. The coaching sessions are also great because they allow you to discuss your weaknesses and your strengths. You can also work on areas you are struggling with so having that 1-1 time can be really helpful.
From my journey so far, I have learnt to use the amazing support and help I had around me to work my way through the projects and studying so far. My team has been super helpful and gave me advice and feedback on projects I have done and also tips for spreading out my time on how best to study. I have also really enjoyed using the community page and signing up for some of the different events that they regularly offer. I also enjoy being able to communicate with other apprentices as they have been through the same experience and it is a great opportunity to network as well.
I feel like I have really developed my skills and knowledge and I’m only three months in. I came into this all-new with no knowledge of the finance, or corporate environment and no knowledge of data and how it is used. I think this was the main reason why I was quite nervous coming into it because I didn’t know what to expect but now I’m so glad I did it and I am where I am now.
If you’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed in your apprenticeship, there are always people you can turn to to help you out or are there to listen to your problems. It’s a great community so you don’t have to feel like you have to struggle on your own and not talk about it.
