What is your favourite thing about your culture?
My family is predominantly from the west coast of Ireland. I spent a large majority of my childhood in a rural Irish county called Leitrim with my family, as well as, Donegal and Co.Mayo visiting my grandparents. Something I really love about the Irish culture is how uplifting, engaging and spiritual it is. It includes a range of language, literature, music, art, folklore, cuisine and sport- a very diverse mix of different fantastic things. I have always enjoyed interacting with Irish music and I would say this is my favourite part of Ireland’s culture. I currently play the flute and this allows me to interact with and feel closer to my heritage.
What kind of traditions do you have in your culture?
Ireland has many different exciting traditions which people all over the world take part in, such as the breathtaking celebration of the ‘Riverdance’- a theatrical show consisting mainly of traditional Irish music and dance. Another significant tradition within Irish culture is the annual, global celebration of Saint Patrick’s day, where millions of people around the globe come together on the 17th March to embrace the national culture. Also, the global holiday of ‘Halloween’ originates from Ireland and many people across the country would traditionally relight new fires as a symbol of rebirth.
Give us a fun fact about your culture/country?
A fun fact about Ireland is that it is the only country in the world to have a musical instrument as its symbol. The Harp!
What is the best place to visit in your country?
There are a few great places to visit in Ireland. Some of my personal favourites is Galway, commonly known as the ‘City of the tribes’. This is a lively and vibrant town that attracts approximately 2.5 million people each year and is the festival central of Ireland. Donegal is another stunning location to visit in Ireland, with fantastic cultural experiences, beautiful scenery and lots to explore!
