What is your favourite thing about your culture?
So I was born in India and moved to the UK when I was around 9 years old. My family is from Punjab, which is in the subcontinent's northwestern corner. One of my favourite things about India is its incredible cultural diversity. India is divided into 29 states, each with its own distinct cultural identity. The languages, faiths, literature, food, and customs vary by state. As somebody who spent her formative years in Punjab, I can confidently say that the Punjabi culture encompasses a rich history and a dynamic social life.
What kind of traditions do you have in your culture?
There are so many traditions within the Punjabi culture but one thing most of them have in common is Bhangra. So bhangra is one of the most popular dance forms of Punjab. It represents the liveliness and dynamism of its people. With loud percussion of the dholak, one cannot help but move with fervour to the melodies of the music. Originally performed on the Vaisakhi festival, the harvest festival of Punjab, but over the years bhangra is done to mark most festive occasions today.
Give us a fun fact about your culture/country?
So, Punjab is called the land of five rivers. The name originates from the Persian language and is the combination of two different words – ‘Punj' means five and ‘ab’ means water. All the rivers start and flow out of the Himalayas. Beas, Sutlej, Chenab, Ravi and Jhelum are the rivers that flow in this land.
Another fun fact about India more broadly speaking is that it has one of the longest rail systems of any country. Trains can run from anywhere between 50 to 60 km/h - this means that it can take more than two days to go from one area of the nation to another.
What is the best place to visit in your country?
There are so many interesting landmarks you could visit in India; the list is endless. I recommend taking a trip out to Leh Ladakh – Ladakh is well known for its spectacular scenery, blue skies, high mountain passes, exciting outdoor activities, Buddhist monasteries, and festivals so one should take the chance to road trip when visiting. It is certainly one that I am hoping to tick off my bucket list!
