I aim to write articles and blogs that equip you with the essentials to ace your apprenticeship programme. I’d like to take this opportunity to share my tips based on my own experiences.

Motivation is the fuel of human dedication. It originates from the word ‘motive’ which signifies needs, desires, and wants within individuals. It is an important factor that can influence your productivity and performance in the workplace. It’s about your decision making and power to put your goals and ambitions into action without needing a constant push from someone. Having motivation can help you stay engaged and passionate about both your work and career.

A lack of motivation can be the biggest obstacle to reaching your goals and everyone has periods of feeling demotivated and having no energy, it’s completely normal! Being demotivated is arguably one of the worst feelings. Do you feel like you have no direction in your career? You are working without a purpose? Do you believe you should have accomplished more by now? If you are experiencing these, you are in the right place to learn what actions you can take to release these negative thoughts. Now, let's break down the common motivation challenges that occur in the workplace on an everyday basis.

Challenges and obstacles:

Fear of failure - I’m sure you are no stranger to this word! Self-doubt and feelings of insecurity about what you are capable of are common occurrences for many people, especially in the workplace. These factors may be signs that you are afraid of failure and this could be holding you back from success.

Low self-confidence - Your limiting beliefs end up influencing the way you think, they are the reason why you constantly doubt yourself, don’t believe in yourself, and why you sometimes lack confidence at work.

You are working without a purpose - Feeling demotivated can often stem from people living their life without any goals or intent. If you are living your life without any ambition or no direction and feel as though you are doing things for the sake of it rather than towards something you want, this can lead to feeling unmotivated.

Motivation strategies to help you cultivate a good mindset at work:

Incorporate a Career development roundtable - This is something that has completely changed my mindset at work and I wanted to share it with you! As an apprentice myself, I never really knew how or who to talk to people about my career progression and what I can do to build myself up to the level I’d like to be at based on my ambitions. Take a moment to think about your career aspirations and who is going to help you achieve them, these people will be part of your roundtable. Each individual can help you in different ways whether it’s your manager, a mentor, another colleague at work, or a fellow apprentice in the same situation as you. This encourages continual growth for yourself to be motivated to succeed in the future.

Time to hit the reset button! - On some occasions, it may be difficult to take some annual leave or just have a day to yourself to relax, so therefore, you need to take moments to pause throughout the day to clear your mind and maintain self-care which can all be done during the work day. Everyone has a different way to reset but the below may give you a starting point.

  • ‘Morning me time’ - Nothing is more grounding than setting the tone for the day ahead, although this may mean waking up a little earlier than usual, but the benefits you will feel throughout the day will be worth it. This could be going for a run, reading some motivational quotes, breathing in the fresh air or even listening to your favourite podcast.
  • ‘Midday pick me up’ - Take some time away from your computer screen during your lunch break and go for a walk either on your own or with some colleagues. Sitting in the same place all day can cause exhaustion and fatigue, it’s important to reset your mind.
  • ‘Evening wind down’ - Try to avoid bright light exposure, limit technology use, or do something to relax yourself ready for the next day ahead.

Learn from a mentor - Anyone can gain a great deal by accessing insights from different mentors throughout their career, even more so, if you are an apprentice, as you may just need a little more support as you embark on your journey into your chosen industry. Multiverse offers a fantastic mentoring programme that has truly helped me so much and I would definitely recommend to anyone thinking of applying.
