From Retail to Tech: My Journey as an Apprentice | by Ross Spears

Choosing your career can be scary. It was no different for me. I finished school, went to college, and worked in retail as a Sales Assistant at CEX. However, I knew it wasn't what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I had to find something more challenging that would hopefully lead to a fulfilling career. That's when I first considered an apprenticeship.

I had heard all the stereotypes and preconceptions about being an apprentice: "You'll just be making tea." "It's not a real job." etc... But as I researched and learned more, I realized that being an apprentice would be a great way to start my career and gain valuable experience through practical hands-on work, mentorship from experienced professionals, networking opportunities, and personal and professional development.

My journey began as a Digital Marketing apprentice at Flightcase Warehouse where I had the opportunity to learn about SEO, social media marketing, and photography. Inspired by this experience, I continued to pursue apprenticeships and worked at Microsoft as a Business Admin Apprentice, followed by a role as a Brand Ambassador at Vodafone.

Throughout the past five years, my career path took me through various roles, including temporary work at Tesco, becoming a Delivery Driver at Ocado, and working as a Sales Assistant and Senior Sales Assistant at EE. Each position presented unique challenges and allowed me to acquire new skills, contributing to my personal and professional growth.

Today, I am proud to work as a Solution Specialist Apprentice at Microsoft. Reflecting on my journey, I am grateful for every experience I've had, both good and bad. Being an apprentice has provided me with the opportunity to explore different industries, learn new skills, and shape my career.

To anyone considering an apprenticeship, my advice would be to go for it. Don't let the stereotypes or misconceptions stop you. Apprenticeships are a great way to start your career and can lead to exciting opportunities in the future.

So, how did I get here? Through hard work, determination, and a willingness to take risks. I wouldn't change a thing. I'm proud to be an apprentice and excited to see where my journey takes me next.
