Read how Rachané Bryan-Henderson (Digital Marketing alumni and current Business Administration apprentice) handles stress in the workplace and maintains a healthy mindset.

What is your current role?

My current role is Office Services Assistant at BBH, a creative advertising agency. My role is quite varied, some of responsibilities include event and office management, organising travel for shoots and supporting the various teams in the agency with resources for pitches and meetings. A typical day would revolve around managing the tech in meeting rooms and around the office. I usually do a check when I first come in to make sure everything is working and ready for the day, and I’ll do an office walk around with my small team to discuss office changes or repairs. On occasion I’ll book travel/couriers for clients to shoot locations.

Could you share an example of a time when you overcame a challenge or stress?

I sometimes experience heavy stress, one reason is because I tend to take on multiple things at once, tasks, problems etc. I have learnt to slow down and take my time. Rather than trying to complete 10 tasks at once, I prioritise the most important tasks and complete them as I go.

What are some of your top tips in maintaining a healthy mindset?

  • Talk and connect with other people. Whether it’s talking about how you’re feeling, or anything in general. Keeping your thoughts and feelings to yourself is not healthy, having someone to talk to and listen to will make you feel less alone and isolated.
  • Exercise! It doesn't just help your physical, but your mind too! Other than just releasing the “feel good” chemicals. It gives you a sense of accomplishment, boosts your self-esteem and relieves stress. You don’t have to spend everyday in the gym, you can go for a long walk, or jog.
  • Writing SMART goals is another tip, it stands for: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Goal setting is a way to help you work towards something (helping you to keep busy). It is essential for your own personal progress and development.
  • Another tip is to just slow down and take a break. It is very easy to get lost in the race of life. But it is important to stop and do something you enjoy, book time off work, watch a movie, read a book etc. Enjoy life as much as you can!

What resources do you use to support your wellbeing?

There are a few resources I use to support my wellbeing:

  • My journal is one of my favourite resources, I tend to have a million thoughts racing around at once. So I use it as a way to get all of the noise out and onto paper. I don’t just write about how I’m feeling, I write about what is going on in my life (good or bad), my goals I would like to achieve in the short term/long term. Even just how my day went.
  • I also use Youtube and Spotify for motivational videos and for other content relating to how I am feeling at the time.
  • Reading is something I like to use to support my wellbeing, there is an author called Vex King, his books “Good Vibes, Good Life” and “Healing Is The New High” are must reads!
  • My local council also provides Cognitive Behavioural Therapy which I have used in the past.

Could you speak about why you have a passion for health and wellbeing?

As I have experienced severe low points in my life and gotten myself out of a serious place. I know it is important to protect not just your physical health, but your mental health and wellbeing too! Sometimes, we can spend so much time looking at the physical side of our body, that we neglect our mental state too.

Do you have any tips for a healthy work/life balance?

When your work day finishes, log off. Do not answer any emails, messages or calls. This is particularly important when working from home, separating work and the relaxation of the home environment is essential, as it is very easy for the two to merge. Completing that extra task, responding to a few quick emails and before you know it you have worked a couple of hours more that should be spent winding down.
