Member of the Month - Barry Nicol
Barry Nicol is a Data Literacy/ Data & Insights for Business Decisions Apprentice at Molson Coors and is the winner of April's Member of the Month!
Hey Barry! Congratulations on winning Member of the Month - could you tell us a little bit about your background, what apprenticeship you are doing & where you work?
I work at Molson Coors Beverages Company in Burton on Trent, where we brew and sell great products such as Carling, Coors, Staropramen, and Madri Excepcional. I’ve been with the Company for almost 30 years, working in Supply Chain Planning, Forecasting, and Sales, and for the last 10 years I have worked in Revenue Management. Data analysis and the generation of insight is fundamental to the role. The Data Literacy/Data & Insights for Business Decisions Apprenticeship has enabled me to both speed up the creation and improve the quality of insight through data visualisation, so I can spend more time action planning with key stakeholders in our business.
So, how do you feel about winning Member of the Month? Can you tell us a bit about your nomination? E.g who you were nominated by and why?
I didn’t even know there was a Member of the Month Award, so I was very surprised when I was contacted to say I had won it. I was nominated by my coach, Freddy Campbell, for work on one of my assignments highlighting one of our amazing company benefits using data visualisations to create presentation materials. This culminated in me creating a video which was posted on our internal communications portal with some really nice feedback. Freddy is a great coach, knowledgeable around the topic, and gives brilliant support to our group.

The Multiverse Community gives Apprentices the opportunity to build meaningful, social and professional relationships. Have you found the Community has helped you to build your network throughout your Apprenticeship and if so, how?
There are quite a few other people from Molson Coors on my Apprenticeship, many of whom I didn’t know before, and so it has been really valuable to build those internal relationships which will last beyond the course. The Community Hub is a brilliant resource, with great content and events, but also offers a chance to reach out for support or alternatively offer help to others. Our Apprenticeship actually started whilst we were being encouraged to work from home due to covid, but I would love to attend one or two of the networking evening events at some point and meet real live people.
What has been the most rewarding experience you’ve had so far as an apprentice?
I do get a level of personal satisfaction from applying my Apprenticeship learnings to generate new or improved insight. However, the biggest buzz comes when you know other people are also using the insight, or they are using my dashboards to create their own insight, as that is the point you know you are making a difference.
