Using AI to Land Your Next Role

Published on September 7, 2023

In this article, we consider ChatGPT and how you can use these as an extra source of support when looking to secure that next role.

Before we dive in, remember that ChatGPT enhances, not replaces, your efforts and is not perfectly accurate, meaning it can (and does) produce outdated or false information. Also ensure you are not copying and pasting generated answers, as not only can these be detected, but you’ll miss out on bringing in your authentic voice and the great skills and experience that only you uniquely bring.

That said, it can act as a support tool in your quest to land a new role. Here are 6 ways to utilise AI in your job search:

1. Crafting Resumes / CVs and Cover Letters:

Use AI to help with grammar checks, help tailor a cover letter to a particular sector or company, make it more concise or incorporate relevant transferable skills. ChatGPT can also help draft template resumes or cover letters that you can use as a base to personalize to your skills and experiences.

"Help me create a compelling resume for a junior project manager position"
"Craft a cover letter showcasing my data analyst skills for a job at a bank”

2. Precision Job Searching:

ChatGPT can help you to uncover search terms, companies, websites, or professional organisations to narrow down your search.

"Suggest relevant keywords for a job as a junior software engineer”
“Generate a list of tech startups headquartered in New York City”

3. Interview Preparation:

Sharpen interview skills by practising questions and responses with ChatGPT. Find the job description as well as the roles and responsibilities you’re interviewing for and use AI as a tool to create potential questions and responses for you. Companies will often be using ‘competency-based’ questions in which they want you to share examples of how you have demonstrated these areas. While AI cannot provide you with your set of real-life examples, you can use it to generate possible questions.

“Create a mock interview for this job. The job requires skills in teamworking, problem-solving, and critical thinking. It also requires me to show the impact I’ve had working with data.”

4. Researching Companies and Staying Industry Savvy:

Demonstrating industry awareness as well as insight into a company is an important part of landing your next role. Ask ChatGPT to summarise a company's culture, achievements, and trends:

"Give me insights on Google’s recent achievements and values."
"What are the current industry trends in using artificial intelligence to help prevent fraud?”

5. Networking and Outreach:

You can use ChatGPT to help you write messages and e-mails which can often take a lot of time.

"Help me write a short request for an informational interview”
"Compose a follow-up message to express continued interest in [company name] role."

6. Skill Enhancement:

You can ask ChatGPT to recommend skill gaps that you may want to fill before applying for your next role.

"Suggest free online courses to learn basic Python”
“Who are some good YouTubers to learn more about public speaking?”
“What skills do I need to move from a middle to senior front-end software developer”

Conclusion
Remember, AI can serve as a tool to support you, but it is not you.  Treat tools as exactly that - ‘tools’ and use them in combination with more traditional and specific methods such as taking the time to research your interviewer by looking at their LinkedIn profile.
